The Timeless Beauty of the Heritage City of Vigan

10-20-2025   Vigan City - Thematic Output

Walking along the cobblestone streets of Vigan City feels like stepping back in time. Every corner tells a story of the Philippines’ rich history, culture, and creativity. Located in Ilocos Sur, Vigan is known as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, celebrated for its well-preserved Spanish colonial
architecture and vibrant local life.

The heart of Vigan lies in Calle Crisologo, a street lined with ancestral houses built during the Spanish period. The walls made of bricks, capiz shell windows, and wooden balconies reflect the blending of Asian and European influences. Walking here in the evening, with lamps lighting up the street and calesas (horse-drawn carriages) passing by, feels like traveling back to the 18th century.

Vigan is also famous for its handcrafted treasures — from burnay jars made of clay, to woven abel Iloco fabrics, and wood carvings crafted by local artisans. These products are not just souvenirs; they are symbols of Vigan’s creativity and heritage passed down through generations.

No trip to Vigan is complete without trying Vigan longganisa (a garlicky native
sausage), empanada, and bagnet (crispy pork belly). These local delicacies reflect the Ilocano people’s love for bold flavors and homegrown ingredients. Food in Vigan is more than a meal — it’s a story of family and culture.

Vigan is not just a city of the past — it continues to grow while preserving its identity. The people’s effort to maintain their culture, crafts, and traditions is what makes this city a true heritage destination. As we explore Vigan, we are reminded that history lives on not in museums, but in the hearts of its people.

Fueling the Future: The Role of Science and Innovation in a Changing World

 09-30-2025      Science Month 2025

Science has always been humanity’s guiding light toward progress, this science month reminds us that the path forward lies in curiosity and discovery. This celebration is not just about honoring the achievements of researchers, inventors, and educators, but also about recognizing the direct impact of science on society, from addressing environmental challenges to transforming the way we live, learn, and communicate.

Science and society are deeply intertwined. In the coming decades, humanity will face complex issues such as climate change, sustainable energy, public health crises, and the ethical dilemmas of artificial intelligence. Through innovation, scientists provide solutions that improve the quality of life while equipping society with tools to adapt to new realities. For example, advances in renewable energy and biotechnology are already helping communities become more resilient and sustainable. By investing in research and innovation, societies can harness the unknown to create a future that balances progress with responsibility. At the same time, science does not exist in isolation; it requires society’s trust, participation, and ethical guidance. As new discoveries unfold, people will need to engage in critical dialogue about the implications of emerging technologies, from genetic engineering to space exploration. The future of science will not only be about breakthroughs in laboratories, but also about inclusivity, accessibility, and ensuring that innovation benefits all, not just a privileged few.

Ultimately, the 2025 Science Month reminds us that the unknown is not something to fear but to embrace. By nurturing curiosity, supporting young innovators, and fostering collaboration across disciplines and nations, we can power a future where science serves as a bridge between human aspirations and societal well-being. The next decades will show us that science is more than discovery — it is a commitment to shaping a better, sustainable, and equitable future.

My Teacher, My Hero: The Unsung Builders of Our Future

 10-14-2025  My Teacher, My Hero

Teachers face countless challenges — long hours, endless lesson plans, and the emotional weight of caring for dozens of students — yet they never give up. Their dedication reminds us that education is not just about learning facts; it’s about becoming better individuals. Every lesson, encouragement, and word of advice they give is a step toward molding us into responsible and compassionate citizens.

As a student, I express my gratitude by showing respect, doing my best in school, and valuing every lesson my teachers share. Simple gestures like saying “thank you,” being attentive in class, or offering help in small ways are powerful ways to show appreciation. Beyond that, I believe the greatest gift we can give our teachers is to apply what they’ve taught us — to live with integrity, kindness, and perseverance.

In celebrating Teacher’s Month, we are reminded that teachers are more than just educators — they are heroes who inspire change, ignite curiosity, and shape destinies. Their influence
lasts far beyond the classroom, echoing in every success and good deed we accomplish. Truly, teachers are the silent architects of a better future.

Vulnerable Nation: Protecting the Philippines from Climate’s Wrath

09-26-2025 Philippines' resiliency towards natural hazards

The Philippines is an archipelago with a tropical climate, highly vulnerable to environmental changes. Sudden or progressive changes in the environment can adversely affect many Filipinos' lives and living conditions. One of the predominant reasons for these adverse effects is the impact of climate change. Rising global temperatures contribute to more intense and frequent disasters like typhoons, floods, landslides, and droughts. These events often lead to loss of lives, damage to infrastructures, and disruption of livelihoods, particularly in communities that are heavily dependent on agriculture and fishing.

Another significant reason is the degradation of natural resources due to unsustainable practices. Deforestation, overfishing, and pollution of water bodies contribute to the decline in the quality of the environment, affecting the livelihoods of those who depend on these resources. For instance, deforestation increases the risk of landslides and reduces biodiversity, while pollution of rivers and seas impacts fishing communities and water supply. These changes make it harder for Filipinos, especially those in rural or coastal areas, to maintain their living conditions and livelihoods.

The country's geographic location also makes it prone to natural hazards like typhoons and earthquakes. Super Typhoons like Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013 have shown the devastating impact of extreme weather events on communities, leading to massive displacements and loss of lives. Progressive changes like sea-level rise also pose long-term threats to low-lying coastal areas, where many communities reside. Adaptation and mitigation strategies are crucial to address these challenges and reduce the adverse effects on Filipinos' lives.

Efforts to address these environmental challenges include promoting sustainable resource management, enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience, and implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. Community-based initiatives and government policies play a crucial role in reducing vulnerability and enhancing the capacity of communities to cope with environmental changes.

Intramurals 2025: A Celebration of Sports, Unity, and Achievement

09-15-2025 ISNHS Intramurals 2025

From September 4 to 7, our school held its annual intramurals, and the whole campus was buzzing with excitement. Honestly speaking, I didn’t participate in any sports, but that does not mean that I was out of the picture. I still had fun being part of the crowd—cheering, watching, and just soaking in the energy of

the games. I watched some of the basketball matches, which were full of intensity. I even went to
Quirino Stadium for the football game. The twist? The team I supported won by default because their opponent didn’t show up. Not exactly the thrilling match I imagined, but hey, a win is a win.

To be real, there were moments when things got a little boring since we could only watch during our

free time. But I find ways to make fun by hanging out at the booths set up by the MAPEH and Cultural Club. The booths added color and pride to the event—it wasn’t just sports, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The highlight for me, though, which happened on September 5, the honor list was announced. I didn’t just get to watch others celebrate, I had something big to celebrate myself. I was one of the nine

students who made it! It felt extra special that my academic achievement was recognized right in the middle of all the sports hype. It was like the best of both worlds, school spirit and personal success.

Looking back, I realized intramurals isn’t just about being an athlete. It’s about being part of the community, whether you’re a player, a cheerer, or even just someone strolling through the booths. It’s

about celebrating together. And for me, this year’s intramurals wasn’t just an event I attended—it was an experience I’ll definitely cherish and remember.

My Journey Through First Quarter: Lessons Learned, Challenges Faced, and Growth Gained.

Tenth Grade is often regarded as the easiest year in Junior High School, but the first quarter proved it to be anything but. This quarter taught me lessons about being open for growth, staying positive, and persevering through challenges with discipline and integrity.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During the first quarter of Grade Ten, I was able to gain new learnings and discoveries that helped me grow academically and personally. In Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, I learned that every individual has freedom, but it comes with responsibilities and limitations. In ICT, under Mrs. Vera Cruz, I discovered how to create and manage blogs. To add, we studied the timeline of the Internet and its pioneers, which helped shape the digital world we have today. Additionally, in Science, I learned about the different tectonic plate-related activities and its processes. On the other hand, in Araling Panlipunan, I learned about disaster preparedness, including ways to mitigate and prevent the effects of earthquakes and other natural calamities. These lessons taught me valuable skills, broadened my knowledge, and helped me become more responsible, prepared, and aware of my role as a student and a citizen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some of the problems and challenges I’ve faced during the first quarter include struggling to balance my time and responsibilities as a student. One of the biggest issues is barely getting enough sleep because of having to manage my requirements and activities for ten different subjects, which sometimes feels overwhelming. On the other hand, I also face personal challenges, such as laziness and procrastination. I often delay doing my tasks and end up cramming to meet deadlines, which adds to my stress and in return, affects the quality of my work.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I addressed these challenges by improving my time management by creating a study schedule for all of my subjects. I started setting my priorities and breaking big tasks into smaller and manageable steps to avoid cramming. I also reduced my habit of procrastination by reducing my screen time to help me focus on one task. Through these efforts, I became more productive, managed my workload better, and felt less stressed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Moving on, I will improve my study habits by managing my time more effectively and staying consistent with my schedule. I will avoid procrastination and focus on completing tasks early to reduce stress. I also plan to stay disciplined and motivated by setting personal goals and reminding myself of the importance of my studies. I aim to become more responsible, productive, and prepared for the challenges ahead.
